Sam Fender was awarded the Mercury Prize recently in his hometown

The star has donated the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound honor prize money to the MVT, which works to preserve the United Kingdom's small music venues.

Fender was given the award on mid-October as his latest record his work was declared the top album of the past year.

Fender has chosen to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the essential function grassroots venues fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the region, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," stated Fender. "These spaces are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately 16 percent of the total UK scene.

In the last year, well-known musicians like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

He also participated, collecting over £100k on his live tour to help 38 grassroots venues across the UK.

These funds supported spaces that were dealing with potential shutdown due to issues caused by water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations received funding support in modernizing facilities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and audiences.

"The idea that revenue from performances in major spaces supports the independent spots, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is far from the only musician to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

In the band won the trophy in the mid-90s for their release their work, vocalist Cocker stated that the band would give their prize money to the charity War Child.

That year, musician the artist split her bounty across a few charities, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also donated a £1,000 to my local community centre, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

In recent years, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the community center that developed their group, alongside other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners the group contributed their award to a MS organization after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," said singer Heather Small. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the bonus, because we had the cake. So our winning impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected several local spots in the South East, by placing them under local control.

One venue in the city and the other in Bristol were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is funded by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "shares" in the buildings.
