An underground market for unlicensed slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.
Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison images, injection guides and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the substance there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injectable developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could assist individuals lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted online as the next Ozempic.
Medical Experts Express Worries
Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could result in users administering products of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.
Some content creators try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or prison.
Service Response and Material Elimination
Based on the social media company, the platform has removed problematic material and banned related hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Research also found communities with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of users, filled with images of weight loss, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at home.
Within minutes of entering one community, a seller shared contact information, where the majority of purchases occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and promised delivery within two days. When asked whether the product was authentic, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. None asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Costs
Inside these groups, posts show dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, stating to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a pen should last, sellers give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Measures
A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“People are administering materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online products may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the surge in demand to current price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to social media. But fake treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has previously encountered individuals injured by personal administration from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly stated the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this point no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental product not yet approved … may expose patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
