Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.
Police report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Police then found numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police say initial examinations suggest the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; officials are currently not aware of any harm in association with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have requested to the residents for tips.
An important representative commented the attack left him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.
"This act hits the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, recalling the murder of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
