One can find many contenders for the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill conceived by Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same amount of cut lumber could be produced in less than a week.”
Thanks to their speedy automated saw, that converted timber into boards using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to build vessels faster compared to any other nation, an advantage that sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, financial as well as cultural dominance across the continent and the globe.
The First True Manufacturing Device
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s first true industrial machine.” A windmill turned a wheel. A single part transformed its rotary motion into vertical action to power the saw. Another component transformed that same spinning movement into a lateral movement feeding the log to the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward one precise increment per stroke.
“Every component seemed modest by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts in order that the machine acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, cutting with each descending motion and advancing on every return stroke. It was an astonishingly intelligent application of fundamental parts.”
